Batman, Rise of the Dark Knight (2012),  starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne and Tom Hardy as Bane, is an exciting action packed movie.  Batman, as the vigilante of Gotham, has gone into retirement as the city continues on in peace in his abscence.  Unfortunately, it is short lived, as Bane and his band of mercenaries takes the Gotham city inhabitants as hostages.  Bruce Wayne has to make the hard choice of coming back as Batman, or leaving it all to Comissioner Gordon (Gary Oldham)  and his police crew, who have branded him as the villain.

This last installment of Jonathon and Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy is a great way to say good-bye to the best Batman movie that DC is ever going to see.  I was a little worried with all of the characters they were putting into the movie, it would be oversaturated, but my trust in the Nolan brothers was rewarded as they intertwined the stories of Batwoman, Bane, Catwoman (Anne Hathaway), Comissioner Gordon, Alfred (Michael Caine), Fox (Morgan Freeman), and Talia (Marion Cotillard) into an action packed, believable, yet staying true to the comics 2 hour and 45 minute movie.  Hans Zimmer kept the mood going with keeping you on the edge of your seats in the action scenes, as well as making you hold back a tear in the dramatic scenes.  Even Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) made a believable, contributing character, even if his true comic book portion was all of  2 scenes.  I do realize that he changed his name at the end of the movie, but it still doe not exclude that fact.  All in all, I would give this movie a 4 star epic rating. 

As for who should see this movie.  I would recommend children 10 and over to see this movie.  Christopher Nolan keeps his blood count to a minumum, which is what I like about him.  I do not need to see needless bloodshed in my comic book movies, nor do the kids.  The movie is filled with action and darkness, at times, so if your children have issues with this, wait until they are older.  This trilogy is not based on the Batman comic books of the Scooby Doo era, it is of a darker time period.   So, just as a parental guide, keep the young  children at home.

Magic Mike

Magic Mike (2012) is a story of *Woo-woo* Channing Tatum's life pre-stardom.   Before he was a dancing hunk in Step Up, he was, yes everyone, a male stripper.  This movie depicts the struggles young people go through in this recession time.  In the movie, he befriends Adam (Alex Pettyfer), who helps the audience step into this saucy world of male dancers.  Dallas (Matthew McConaughey), is the ringleader of these ragtag men, who find that sometimes dollar bills do add up.  You will also be glad to know that Matt Bomer and Kevin Nash also get to be apart of these risque men. 

Overall, the movie was definitely entertaining to watch.  Especially for the old ladies that seemed to make a majority of the audience.  Some scenes make you cringe and think "Oh wow, I am so glad I do not have to do that for some ones."  The love story was also a nice touch.  I could have done without the multitude of sex scenes and drug parts that seem to make up a lot of stars lives these days.  It would be nice to think that that is just what stars do, but it seems to be what more than just them that do it. 

Should kids go see this movie?  Definetely not.  It is not a kids movie in any way shape or form.  If you think it is okay for your kids to go see male strippers, I would not recommend them for the orgies and drug scenes.  I say keep the age group to 18 and over, you know, the ones that can legally see the live striptease shows.

The Amazing Spiderman (2012)

The Amazing Spiderman (2012), is a great movie, of a redo of the Spiderman origin movie. Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), is left by his parents to his Aunt May (Sally Field) and Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen), and has to grow up to be a nerd on his own.  Luckily, he meets a nice girl, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), who is an actual woman side kick that helps out.  Peter helps out Dr. Conner (Rhys Ifans) to make a serum to help out humanity for Oscorp.

The Amazing Spiderman scores 4 stars.   The movie is full of action and some tear jerking scenes.  Yes, the movie does retell the same old story, but with a new twist, and it is more enjoyable than the previous movies.  Peter is actually a smart nerd in this movie, rather than just a loser as in the old ones.  He also has more of the original powers of Spider Man, rather than shooting goo out of his wrists. 

Should kids go see this movie?  It is a little dark, and some of the content is heavy.  But, the movie should be okay for 8 and up to see.  There are not many bloody scenes in it, no gore, or sex content.

Rock of Ages

Rock of Ages (2012) is a musical movie using 80's music.  It stars Diego Boneta as Drew, who is an aspiring singer trying to get his band famous.  The love interst and Drew's muse is Sherrie (Julianne Hough), who is a small town girl looking for a new life in Los Angeles.  Many stars have graced this movie, including Alec Baldwin (Dennis), who runs the bar that Drew and Sherrie work, his assistant, Lonnie (Russell Brand), Patricia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), who wants to shut down the bar, and the star that everyone wants to be Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise). 

Overall, the movie is a very well done musical.  The movie is true to all musicals, where every other statement ends up in a musical outburst, and there is always one love song that has nothing to do with the rest of the movie, but without it, you could not classify it as a musical.  They even have a few songs that are entertwined together, which sound great.  I was impressed how well all of the stars sang, and belted out their 80's rock ballads.  The only thing that I wish they would have done was to have given the stars slightly larger hair.

 Should kids go see this movie?  I would say this movie is not suitable to children.  The language and content is very vulgar, living up to the expectations of 80's genre of sex and rock'n'roll.  I would leave the movie watchers to the ones who actually lived in the 80's.

Wrath of the Titans

Wrath of the Titans (2012) is a movie about, you guessed it, the sequel to the Greek mythology movie Clash of the Titans (2010). In this movie, Perseus (Sam Worthington) is bestowed another godly quest by Zeus (Liam Neeson) to help the gods keep the evil of their father Kronus from resurfacing. Perseus is joined by Andromeda (Rosamund Pike) and Agenor (Toby Kebbell)to find their way to the underworld and save the world from impending chaos and doom.

This movie gets a half star failure rating. If you are looking for an action packed movie, it is great. If you are looking for a Greek mythology movie, it is hopelessly lost. Now, I am all for changing up the stories so the same boring old story is not told again and again, but when you change the whole mythology system, please, just call it Wrath of the Humans, and leave the whole Greek part out. The movie is racked with sexism in that only the male gods show up to stop the wrong doings of the humans. Because Athena and Artemis are girls and cannot fight, they had to send Ares in their place. For some reason there is a girl in the army to go to the underworld, but she is the only weak one who prays to the wrong god. Also, Athena is a girl who is not worthy enough to be the god of war, so they have Ares be the god of war that the warriors pray to. Even the little boy in the movie is stronger than the girls. And for some reason Hephaestus is so hated by the gods, that he was given an English accent. So, the last question begs, is should kids be allowed to watch this? There is not a lot of blood or gore in the movie, or cussing, so I would say that it is safe for 10 years and up, but again, stress to them to read their mythology, because Percy Jackson does a better job at depicting that than this movie.

Footloose (2011)

Footloose (2011), with Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough is a movie about a rogue high school student who tries to make a difference in his community.
Ren, Kenny Wormald, is new in town, and finds that this town has quite a few too many rules.  The curfew is bad enough for teenagers, but to add that drinking, drugs, and dancing are also taboo, tends to be a bit too much.  He befriends Ariel, Julianne Hough, and together, they try to not only get through high school, peer pressure, and getting around parents, but also try to get past the rules of the town.


This movie is, of course, a remake of the 1984 Footloose, with Kevin Bacon, but it brings about its own new flare.  These new actors could be on their way to their own 6 degrees of Kenny Wormald.  Who would have thought that Kevin Bacon would have been as big when he was in Footloose.  I would rate this movie as an entertaining movie for high schoolers and college students.

Immortals

Immortals (2011), is a movie once again about the Greek Gods and humans. Theseus, Henry Cavill, is the mortal in this movie. He has to go against King Hyperion, Mickey Rourke. King Hyperion wants what most kings want; ultimate power. He is in search for Heracles' bow, which can unleash the Titans against the gods. Theseus, has the ability to stop him through his fighting ability and ability to lead others (not to mention some words of wisdom from Zeus).


It would be nice if finally a movie about Greek Mythology could be worthwhile to watch. I am a big Greek and Roman Mythology fan and have read the numerous stories of them. I just wish that one movie could actually catch the essence of the mythologies. The characters seem to fall short and the gods are usually spineless and unsure of what to do. You would think with all their godly powers, they would be able to make SOME decisions. It seems that Hades is the only one that can ever make any decisions. Yet, Hades is not in this movie, so the gods are left to just mindlessly watch. And when they actually do want to help, Zeus, who helps in the beginning, is offended by the help and keeps any of the other gods from helping. Unlike in any other Greek Mythology stories, where the gods have their hands in everything. Of course, the gods should be just figureheads in this movie as well. And, to put this story in moden day, the main characters do not believe in the gods, which is not seen in any of the stories, where the people hold the gods in high esteem and are afraid to do anything to anger them. I think it would be better, if the movie writers want to put these movies in modern time, to make up their own stories about gods and humans, and then to put their own spin on it, instead of trying to recreate a past they do not fully understand.

I give this movie half a star, and it is definitely not for kids. It should be for mature teens and above, for the multitude of bloody scenes, and senseless violent, not to mention senseless bedroom scenes. Nothing like a bloody, sweaty man, to turn on a virgin oracle. The characters are also unpredictable, and even though the title is Immortals, nobody seems to be immortal, not even the gods and titans. I do not know what the writers were trying to make, but it is not a story about Greeky mythology, greek times, or immortals. In fact, the story is not even immortal, because it will soon be forgotten.

In Time

In Time, 2011, starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfreid is an action Sci-Fi movie about a possible future where time literally is money. 
  In the movie, Will Salas (Timberlake), is one of the poor people in this new world.  He and his mother live day by day, literally, with just enough hours to keep them alive for the day.  They use the time to buy food, coffee, and even rent. Once the time runs out, however, they die.  So, the rich live forever, and the poor die young.  Salas and his new accomplice, rich Sylvia Weis (Seyfreid), try to even the scales and make the poor rich.  But, they soon learn, why Robin Hood's-robbing-the-rich-to-feed the poor, would be hard to have work in current times. It is hard to get a movie to wrap politics in with action and get a full movie across.  The movie, does fall short a little, and you have to either know your capitalism or just be happy with all the running and gun firing to have a full effect of a movie. 
I know that Justin Timberlake is trying to break into the movies.  I think he is a good actor, and it is hard to find well written movies, nowadays, so don't judge him too harshly for this movie.  As far as who should watch this movie, I recommend people who enjoy action movies, or people that can follow high concepts in movies.  There is not a lot of gore, sexual situations, or nudity in the movie, so it is not bad for teenagers, but again, the political part of the movie, might be over their heads. 
I rate this movie a 4/5.

The Vow

The Vow, 2012, starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams was a box office hit over the weekend.  So, how did this Chick-Flick rate for you? 
The Vow is a movie about the trials that Paige (Rachel McAdams) and Leo (Channing Tatum) went through as their marriage faces the real test of "for better or for worse".  Paige suffers a severe concussion, where she ends up losing her memory of the past few years.  She does not remember that she is married to Leo or anything about her current life. She only remembers that she was in law school and engaged to another man.  Leo has to fight hard to regain the love of his wife and Paige has to fight hard to face the demons of her past once again. 

I found this movie to be a good, down to earth movie, but not laggy.  Lots of dramas nowadays tend to drag in the middle and you wonder why you even care.  But, in this movie, you root for the couple the whole time.  I found it also to be refreshing that it was a clean movie, with only one swear word and one butt shot of Tatum.  Sorry, men, there was no female nudity in this movie. 

Now, I just want to make sure you are educated to what this movie is about before you see it.  Many women in the theater were crying through the whole movie, and some walked out.  Some women said that they did not expect the movie to be like that.  I am not too sure what they were expecting from the previews, but I will let you know that it is not a romantic comedy.  Romantic yes, Comedy, no.  In fact, at first, I was upset with the movie, because how romantic Leo was to Paige, made me sick that only Hollywood could write men to be so loving, but then I discovered at the end of the movie, that it was based on a true story, so perhaps there is hope out there that romantic men are out there.

If you are looking for a nice, clean, romantic movie, then I highly recommend seeing The Vow.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked (2011), starring Justin Long, Jason Lee, David Cross, and is a live action movie with computer animated chipmunk characters laced into the movie for a nice sequel to the first live action move: Alvin and the Chipmunks.


So, the big question that many parents have is: "Is this a good movie for children?" I vote yes, this is a good movie for children. I took a two year old and a 12 year old to the movie. They both sat through the whole movie and enjoyed it. The two year old loved the bright colors of the chippettes and the singing and dancing that is characteristic of a "Chipmunk" movie. The twelve year old enjoyed the story, the banter between the chipmunks and chippettes, and the occassional human. For the adults, who have to take the kids to the movies, it is also enjoyable. I found the movie to be fun, tells a nice story, nothing too deep, but touching, especially for family feel. If you are looking for a deep Shakespearean, Oscar winning acting, then save your money, but this is a kids movie, not a movie about kings.

The actors do a good job, however.  Justin Long is very convincing as Alvin.  And who can argue that Matthew Gray Gubler does not know how to be nerdy Simon.  Who said he could only get into the minds of criminals?  He is a nerd, you know.  David Cross cannot help but being the annoying antagonist in the movie, as always.  Jason Lee is actually a very good dad, at least to little chipmunks. 

But, if you have any doubt about the movie, just ask Alvin.

The Smurfs

The Smurfs (2011) starring Hank Azaria and Neil Patrick Harris is a funny movie that is enjoyable by the kids and adults.  For those few of you that actually enjoyed the cartoon, this movie does justice to the movie, including bringing in tidbits only us loyal Smurf fans would dare  admit.  It also brings in a realistic affect of how our world and the  Smurf world connect, as well as brining in the creator of the Smurts, Peyo.  It also brings in a few cracks at the cartoon world vs. ours. Such as how cartoon characters wear the same clothes day in and day out.

Papa Smurf:  Shh, Smurfette.  Don't embarass her.  She probably got it dirty.
The humor is innocent and cute.  Much unlike the current movies out today that only believe in potty humor for our youth. 
I was a little worried at first to have Gargamel in the movie.  I could easily see that he would be over the top stupid or be put into the "teenage humor" that so many of the evil characters tend to fall into.  He actually stayed true to his character and he made it believable and not the over-the-top-humor that these types of movies usually have.  My hats off to Hank Azaria for doing such a superb job at such a ridiculous character.
And of course, who can forget Neil Patrick Harris.  No matter, what you put this guy in, you have to smile as soon as he opens his mouth.  So, yes, he is a perfect fit for this little comedy. 
I was a little apprehensive at first about this movie, but this is definitely a 5 star movie under the children's comedy section of the video store.

Inception

Inception is a movie by Warner Brothers, Directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, and Ellen Page.

I'l rate this movie as a 5 star intellectual science fiction, suspense/ psuedo action movie.  IMDB rates it as an action movie, but I would dub it more of a mild action movie.  But, when you have Angels in the Outfield boy fighting on the ceiling, you just don't get more action than that.

The premise of the movie is  novel idea, in that in order to get your way, you need to implant ideas in people's dreams.  Instead of the usual corporate espionage of buying up shares from a dummy company, leave it to the Japanese to come up with the ultimate fail safe plan of getting control of a company.  Do not look at the fact that it cost him millions of dollars and lives lost, the ends justify the means.  But, the idea is still a cool one, and if he did not come up with it, Leo and Tommy Solomon would not have had a chance to inject themselves with a dream inducing chemical. 

The dream sequences were very imaginative.  The CG was very good and made you feel that the dreamworld was real.  The music also gave a very epicness to the movie.  Hans Zimmer, can do no less.

The movie gets a five star for being original.  I enjoy the Nolan brothers for this very reason.  In their movies, they tend to find a theme, twist it around, but stay true to its essence.  During the whole movie, you are sitting on the edge of your seat to see if Leo can pull off this great heist.  I felt that the acting was believable in this movie.  Leonardo's character, Cobb, is the main character, who has two missions to fill; one to keep his boss happy, and two to find peace with his wife in the dreamworld.  Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Arthur, is the trustworthy sidekick.  Ellen Page, Ariadne, is the usual rookie, who gives the viewer a person to relate to as the viewer gets to understand this new concept.  And then you have your usual side riff raff that all movies need to incorporate to seem fuller.
